A Good Harvest

June 15, 2011

Yesterday I had a good harvest.   Did you know I have a huge garden growing in the parking lot behind our townhouse?

Ok so it’s a farmers market but it is literally in my back yard.  I won’t miss much about living 100 ft from a monstrous shopping centre but this is very cool.

The market gets larger every Sunday as the crops progress.  This weekend I picked up green beans,

Baby potatoes.   Jojo is a potato girl and could eat mashed with gravy at every meal.

Crispy and super fresh peppers along with baby cukes.   These will give a week of crunchy salads.

Tomatoes.   I think my favourite summer food is tomatoes which is really ironic because as a kid they were my  least favourite (besides onions).    It wasn’t until I was in my mid twenties that I could appreciate what a straight off the vine tomato tasted like.  My in-laws always had a huge garden on their farm and I couldn’t help but want to like them because of how perfect and bright red they were.    It just goes to show that you really can train your taste buds.

Steve picks out the perfect beef steak tomato for a sandwich in the afternoon.

I bought a big basket of plums.  Honestly, plums are not our favourite but only because the ones you get at the grocers always seem just a bit too old and often mealy.    These however, were sweet, a bit sour and perfect!    I forgot how good fresh plums were.

Blueberries.   My favourite fruit by far. These babies travelled all the way from B.C.   Have I ever told you the story about living on a blueberry farm in Richmond B.C. and having a crop duster wake me up one morning right outside my bedroom window?   Fun times!  I knew for sure no pests were gonna settle on my furniture or skin for that matter.   We moved out 2 weeks later.

Have you been to a farmers market yet this year?

Sad to say I have not – weekends have been too busy. That looks like a good market though, everything looks so good!

I always go to that same market on Sundays. But I have not been there this year yet. Wait until the peaches come. They are the best peaches in the world. We buy a hugh basket every sunday when they arrive right up until they are no longer available. Last year I was buying them for people here at work because they tasted mine. Also a great time to bottle some peppers for the winter. Plain ones and hot ones. Just roast them and put in bottles and freeze until you are ready to use.
    Same with the tomatoes.

I can’t wait for the peaches to come out. I do the same with the peppers but instead I put them in single serving ziploc bags so that I can just grab one out of the freezer when I need it.
