Have you been scared by the news lately? I’m a news crackhead….I never know when to say enough is enough.
Gaddafi is still terrorizing his people in Libya.
There is a possibility of civil war in Syria.
Stauss-Khan, a future candidate for president of France tries to rape a hotel maid in NY.
Anthony Weiner and Arnold Schwarzenegger shamelessly take over American news with their piggish behaviour and finally….
Food born illnesses taking on a scary rise in North America and Europe. E coli is causing major problems in Germany while America is experiencing a continuing rise in Salmonella outbreaks.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news and don’t get me wrong….these are all not comparable in order of world bad news but since I do focus on food in this blog, well, this e coli and salmonella stuff freaks me out.
Seeing as I’m constantly battling with my vegan self, this here little pie chart has pushed me that much more over the vegan edge.
Salmonella is on the rise….big time.
In case you were interested, here’s the way I see it. 67% of this chart is made up of animal product. 20% is other which can be sprouts, leafy greens, roots, fish, grains-beans, shellfish, oil-sugar, and dairy. This 20% contains fish and shellfish which I believe deserve their own piece of the pie.
The remaining 13% of the chart is fruit, veggies and nuts.
I follow all the rules. I buy the freshest looking chicken and seafood (the only meat I buy). I refrigerate or store it immediately. I have a completely different cutting board for meat and then proceed to bleach it including my sponge immediately after prep. I overcook all meat since that’s the only way the man will eat it.
I’m neurotic. Yet I sill worry. What I take from the above pie chart is that if I eliminate all meat and dairy, I eliminate most of the dangerous salmonella bacterias passageway into my kitchen. I feel confident my food prep is spot on.
So what’s a chicken and egg foodie loving girl to do?
For now I’m still fighting the inner battle of consuming animals at all, add nasty food born illnesses and I’m all messed up.
I’m fairly confident that unless my future allows a property large enough for my own free range chickens…..vegan is the future. Seeing as how I live in Canada’s largest, most populated city, chickens running around in my back yard won’t make me any friends.
Wouldn’t it be nice have a huge vegetable garden all summer? Bessie waiting to be milked each morning and fruit trees to harvest from and then time to process all of this for the year to come? Hold on…I just made myself Laura Ingels best friend in Little House in the Prairie!
Besides all that…..A shout out to the cutest 5 year old I know.
Happy birthday Carly!
