Farmers Markets = Happy

June 8, 2011

I was pleasantly surprised to find a small Farmers market set up in the parking lot of the mall we’re living very close to temporarily.

It was small  but well stocked.   Asparagus is in season and for $3 I picked up 2 big bunches of skinny fresh stalks.

A huge punnet of ripe grape tomatoes.

A mix of 6 yellow and red peppers.

A dozen large pickling cucumbers.

White button mushrooms and two massive containers of strawberries and blueberries.

All cheap, all fresh and all from local Ontario farmers.   I love this time of year.

I also picked up a jar of organic dried tomato sprinkles.   This was one of those, why didn’t I think of that? moments.    I always dehydrate my plum tomatoes when in season but I never thought of drying them out just a bit more and then grinding down into a spice.

Great idea!   I mixed 1 tbsp of this with 1 1/2 tablespoons of fig vinegar and some salt and pepper for a dressing.

Next I chopped up some of my purchases and made a huge raw veggie salad.   Pour sun-dried tomato dressing on top with a sprinkle of pepitas (pumpkin seeds).

Nothing fancy.  Just fresh, crunchy and delicious.  Who said salads need lettuce?

Add a small grilled chicken breast, shrimp or baked tofu and turn this into a filling dinner.

how are the sundried tomatoe flakes? Sounds like a good idea but I would think you would need to add alot to get the flavour.

Not at all. Sundried tomatoes have such a strong earthy flavour that you only need to add mild ingredients so that you can pour it over your salad. Next I’ll make a dip with yogurt or cottage cheese but for now I just mixed it with a flavoured vinegar and some salt and pepper. These would be good sprinkled on roasted veggies and tofu I think.

punnet? learn something new every day! Haven’t you had two summer seasons this year?

A punnet is a measurement of volume and yes I have indeed had two summer seasons this year……as I should every year. 2 summers, 2 springs, 2 falls and 2 more summers.
