Graham Crackers

March 22, 2011

Who doesn’t love graham crackers?   I do.   The teenagers do.   Marshmallows do.  Chocolate do does.   Campers love graham crackers.

The truth is, if I was any good at this blogging thing, I would have built the most beautiful smores out of these home-made graham crackers and then taken the most beautiful picture a n d…….

I didn’t.

Instead I followed this very good recipe and between the four us proceeded to eat each and every cracker before a smore could ever be attempted.

The recipe calls for shaping the crackers and then lying them out on a cookie sheet separately.   I rolled out the dough between two pieces of parchment paper, transferring it to the cookie sheet.  Remove the top piece of paper and using a sharp wet knife, cut the dough into strips.   Using a wooden skewer I poked holes in the dough for no other reason then to be cute.  Sprinkle with sugar….just because.

Once baked, remove and let cool on the cookie sheet.   You can now break off the cookies when cooled.

Make these.   It’s easy, I promise and you won’t have to go out and find a lot of these ingredients….

Ingredients: UNBLEACHED ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE {VITAMIN B1}, RIBOFLAVIN {VITAMIN B2}, FOLIC ACID), SUGAR, GRAHAM FLOUR (WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT FLOUR), SOYBEAN OIL AND/OR PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED COTTONSEED OIL, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, HONEY, LEAVENING (BAKING SODA AND/OR CALCIUM PHOSPHATE), SALT, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, SOY LECITHIN – AN EMULSIFIER, CORNSTARCH. CONTAINS: WHEAT, SOY.

Do you really want partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil?  no.       How bout High Fructose Corn Syrup?  Lord no!      Emulsifiers and artificial flavours are something I could live without….forever.

Do you have a store-bought food that needs a recipe makeover?

Ok, I am still not clear on this concept. It seems like quite a lot of work to make these and, did you know, you can buy these already made?

Now, now…we both know home made is always better and well worth the effort. Now be a good mother and make your children some graham crackers 🙂
