Cooking aside

October 10, 2010

I know it looks like all I ever do is cook, or shop so that I can cook, or blog so that I can talk about what I Just cooked   but believe it or not I do have other hobbies.

I do some painting.  Very basic acrylics and usually I copy other portraits and just make them mine by changing colors or little additions here and there.   The beach house we’re renting right now is very basic and all the walls are white so I’ve been trying to add some color but still stick with some sort of beach theme.   The above crazy palm tree was fun to do as the colors are so random and no precision needed (good for me).

This one really wakes up a boring white wall

This canvas is huge and still a work in progress.  Although it may look ok in this photo, it’s not.  It’s taken a month so far and it is  horribly amateurish 🙂  I wanted a large red painting here because most of my appliances are red and I plan on displaying them on the kitchen counters which is right beside this table.   Not sure if it will make the cut but I plan to keep at it.   Wish me luck!

Now back to the topic of food. …

The girl who rented this house before us planted a vegetable garden in a spot that I would never imagine to be ‘fruitful’ but I’ve been told by my neighbours that she produced an impressive amount of produce so how could I not give it a go?          We have a very closed in patio at the back that measure maybe 100 sf.    This consists of cement surrounded by a high wooden fence.  Here I dry all of my clothes on a wire clothes dryer because I only have a washing machine (yes true!).     There are raised bricks all along the fence which I have filled with organic vegetable soil, compost,  veggies and then lots of mulch to help keep the moisture in since it will get so hot here in summer.

In this small spot I’ve managed to plant 2 pumpkins, 2 cucumbers, 1 zucchini, 4 red peppers, 5 yellow beans, basil, rosemary, oregano, 5 tomato plants and 3 jalapeno plants.  Not bad huh? I have a possum or 2 getting on my nerves and digging holes so I’ve had to lay screens all over….so far so good!

What did you plant in your garden this summer?

Have I told you lately how much I hate you. You truly make me sick. Now you’re an artist. And very good I might add. The pizza looks delicious. Your place looks very cute, but your I can do everything attitude is starting to piss me off.

lol! that’s the thing about blogging…you only put the good parts in. I don’t think anyone wants to see the burnt pizza I pulled before this one! Let’s not get into ‘I can do everything’ Ms. Leader of the Beavers. 🙂
