Orange you loving fall?

October 4, 2010

I must state first and foremost that I am in NO way complaining but…..I miss fall in Canada.   I probably wouldn’t be missing it at all if weren’t for my sister rubbing it in and reminding me of all the goodies available right now like butternut squash, pumpkins and apple picking.  Thanks Kelly In Sidney we have oranges in season right now and they’re super good.  It’s easy to go wrong with citrus as you never know what you’re going to get until you peel them.  There’s nothing worse than a dried up orange with no flavor but these are huge, thick-skinned navels that are sweet and juicy.   It’s a good thing too because I just bought a case of 24!    I’m going to enjoy all I can because the season is almost over.

Josee and I have been eating 2 or 3 a day. She eats them straight up while I like them in my daily yogurt.  Today with gojis, chia seeds, cinnamon and of course coconut.    oh yeah!

What fruit do you fill up on when in season?

Michelle this is my way of making yogurt. Your recipe though.
When I went to buy a yogurt maker, my sales lady was an Indian woman who was brought up on yogurt and she said you do not need a yogurt maker, they are a waste of time. Also I do not like using a Micro Wave anymore. Thyroid cander is now one of the highest cancers in the world and 75% of it is women. SO avoid having dental X-rays. Don’t let them give it to your children. Don’t use micro-waves very often. Instead heat your skim milk on the stove until you see small bubbles and the let it cool to room temperature. 3 qts of skim milk, 1/2 cup of skim milk powder, and 1/2 cup of store bought yogurt.Stir well. Put all of this in your microwave and cover with plastic wrap and then put one cup of boiling water in the microwave> Just sit it beside the dish of yogurt and close the door for about 3 hours. Just before going to bed boil that cup of water again and close microwave door for the night. Fresh yogurt to wake up to.

Thanks mom, I’m definitely giving this a try! This all makes sense since the old fashioned way of making yogurt was just letting it sit at a very low temperature near the fire or later on in the oven. We’ve all become so used to technology doing the work for us (especially me!).

Kelly, that makes me think of the huge batch of jam you ate one year with a spoon right out of the jars!
