Bbq’d tofu

July 1, 2010

I love tofu!  there I’ve said it.   I don’t know why no one ever believes me when I say that??   I think it’s because like quinoa, people are unsure of how to prepare it or with what to serve along side it.  I’ve been cooking with tofu for many years and now know that ‘simple’ is best when it comes to this perfect low fat source of  protein.  I think of it as a blank canvas because it starts out as a flavorless block which can then be moulded, sculpted and turned into something completely different!    I used to cook with tofu or some other form of soy 3 or 4 times a week but recent studies have indicated that too much soy could be doing funny things with our hormones and so until more reearch is done, I stick to twice a week now.

Last night I made a simple marinade of equal parts ……

soy sauce

hoisin sauce

lemon juice

2 cloves of minced garlic

hot sauce (optional)

2 blocks of very firm organic tofu

The trick to making tofu have that meaty consistency is to first freeze it and then either let it de thaw over night or simply microwave which takes no time at all.  Open the package and squeeze as much water out as possible.

After the mixture marinades for a few hrs or even better, overnight, I sliced the block in half to make it thinner and bbq’d it until crispy on each side.  Notice the grill marks!

I then sliced each half on the bias (like you would a bbq chicken breast).

This can be served with anything you would serve your regular protein with and will also keep nicely in the fridge for 3 or 4 days.  This is delicious instead of a veggie burger with cheese and all the toppings or like I do with the man’s lunch, Fill a large whole wheat pita with bbq’d tofu, spinach, goat cheese and habanero mustard.   So don’t be afraid and stay tuned cause there’s plenty more where that came from!

that actually looks good – I’m terrrible at making tofu. I’ve tried many times to make those “chicken” nugget things you make and it never works out.

I’ll make them one day this week and you can try my recipe….Josee won’t eat meat anymore so I’m cooking sometimes 3 different meals a night…..I’m an idiot. How’s the vegetarian thing going for all of you?

good, but I can’t get into the tofu. The girls really hate it too. I’ll have to wait a couple months at least before I try it again with them. I made the “nuggets” for lunch one day and told them it was chicken nuggets and they were all spitting them out. I also can’t stand soy milk. So Joe won’t eat meat, why? Is it cause she dosn’t like it or for ethical reasons?

I’m laughing at them spitting out the tofu….I tried the chicken thing too but they believed me because I started them on it so early. She had a friend trying it so she did to and now won’t stop. I think she’ll get sick of it soon enough but for now I’m humoring her. I don’t like soy milk much either but you should try almond breeze, it’s so good and the kids would probably like the chocolate one.
